A few weeks ago I saw an Audi A4 All Roader, a European import, parked alongside the Chinese made and stretched Audi A4L, it was remarkable to see how the A4 had grown in China compared to the Euro version, then a little while later I saw the last generation B5 model which wasn’t stretched for China and looked like a tiddly compact. This is where the new A3 will sit in the Chinese market, a compact car where the A4L should have been.
The new A3 Sedan will be brought into China in early 2014 at the new Foshan plant which is currently gearing up to produce the VW Golf and Audi Q3, but once production levels have settled the A3 sedan and hatch combo will be introduced ASAP. Engines for the Chinese market are likely to be 1.4 twin turbo and possibly 1.8T engines to give the A3 some overlap against the VW Sagitar/Jetta and also to give the A4L some breathing room at the bottom of the scales.
